Getting started
How does virtual physical therapy work?

You meet with Brian Jones, DPT by secure video for your evaluation and follow-up visits. Between visits, your care team supports your home exercise program and answers questions, so care continues outside of scheduled appointments too. See the full how it works page for the step-by-step.

Who is my clinician?

Brian Jones, DPT — a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy with 20 years of clinical experience, 12 of them practicing across the Hawaiian Islands. He makes every clinical decision; AI agents support scheduling, documentation, and billing but never replace his judgment. Meet Brian →

What do I need for a virtual PT visit?

A device with a camera and a stable internet connection — a phone, tablet, or computer all work. The Atlas movement screen runs directly in your browser, with nothing to install.

What islands does Virtual PT Hawaii serve?

All of them — Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and Hawaii Island. Because visits are virtual, your specific location on any island doesn't limit care.

Insurance
Is virtual physical therapy covered by insurance in Hawaii?

In most cases, yes. We're in-network with HMSA, Traditional Medicare, TRICARE West, UHA, UnitedHealthcare, and more. Coverage details depend on your specific plan, which is why we verify your benefits before your first visit rather than guess.

Do I need a physician referral for virtual PT?

Most plans require one for virtual PT specifically. If you don't already have a referral, our team helps you get one before your evaluation.

What if my insurance isn't listed?

Reach out and we'll check — payer contracts change and we're actively adding more. If we're not in-network with your plan, we'll tell you directly.

Will I know what I owe before my visit?

Yes. We verify your copay, coinsurance, and visit limits ahead of time, so you have a real number before you book. See full details on the insurance page.

What if I don't have insurance, or my plan isn't in-network?

Cash-pay options are available. Call (808) 726-2257 to discuss pricing directly.

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring
What is Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM)?

A Medicare- and many-payer-recognized service where your care team reviews your home exercise program, symptoms, and progress between scheduled PT visits, not just during them.

Who is eligible for RTM?

Generally, patients already established in a physical therapy plan of care for a musculoskeletal condition. Specific eligibility depends on your insurance plan. See the full RTM page for details.

Does insurance cover RTM?

Billed through insurance where covered — rules vary by payer and plan. Your specific coverage is checked before you're enrolled.

How do I enroll in RTM?

RTM must be ordered as part of your plan of care by your physical therapist, and you give consent before it starts. Ask about it during intake or at your next visit.

Movement screening & the KinematiX™ platform
How accurate is the Atlas movement screen?

For the measurements it reports — like hip and knee range of motion — Atlas performs in a similar error range to in-person goniometry. It deliberately doesn't report measurements the evidence doesn't support yet. Full breakdown with citations on the accuracy page.

What is KinematiX™?

The technology platform behind Virtual PT Hawaii — the system running your telehealth visits, your home exercise program, and the Atlas motion-capture engine. It doesn't replace clinical judgment; Brian still makes every decision. Read more →

Is my movement and health data private?

Yes. Care is delivered through HIPAA-compliant systems, and your data is protected the same way any medical record is.

Resources
Where can I find equipment recommendations?

Brian keeps a curated list of PT tools and equipment he recommends on the PT Tools page.

Has Brian written anything else about physical therapy?

Yes — Cracked: The Evidence Behind the Manipulation, a sourced, clinician-written examination of spinal manipulation with over 350 citations, available on Kindle.

How do I contact the practice outside of a scheduled visit?

Call (808) 726-2257 or text (680) 465-6601. Kai, the 24/7 intake and reception agent, answers and routes you to the right person.
